Australian cherry growers are “fairly optimistic” about the forthcoming season, Cherry Growers Australia president Tom Eastlake believes.

Speaking to Channel Nine News, Mr Eastlake said the dry forecast for summer was good news, as it meant the amount of cherry splitting would be minimised. “At the moment, we’re fairly optimistic on the season,” he said. “It will not be without its foibles, not without its pressures, largely due to moisture restrictions, but we’re pretty confident for the time being.” Mr Eastlake said farmers would love to see a premium in prices this year – “because they are going to need it” – but that would largely depend on the quantity and quality of produce that hits the market.
